THE JEWISH QUARTER
Jewish quarter spread over two areas, once a meeting place for Jews and Christians, with the city's ancient monument
The 1492 th century dates from the arrival of the Jewish community of which a party fled to Portugal after the promulgation, in, of the edict of expulsion ordered by the Catholic Kings and one part converted to Catholicism. The latter form the brotherhood (cofradía) of the converted (conversos) whose party has been maintained since then. Most worked the leather, as cobblers or artisans but they were also tailors, writers and lenders. This presence left traces of street names: ., cofradía or center even though there are no traces of synagogue. Today, its route extends from the Plaza, a former meeting place between Jews and Christians to the Ambroz river. Where we find the Puente Chiquita, the oldest monument in the city. Between these two spaces, there is a maze of narrow alleys, sloping or with stairs and a set of houses with high cornices. All built on a similar model: wood wood, granite and converted, and perfectly maintained.
