Chalk mountains immortalized in a film, which present a landscape of steeped rivers between terraced hills
The chalk mountains of the Hurdes were immortalized in Luis Buñuel's 1932 film, Tierra sin pan, (Land without Bread). Las Hurdes features a landscape of rivers cut into terraced hills. The picturesque black villages of Batequilla, Fragosa and El Gasco are built on an old volcano. Crossed by the Hurdano River and the C-512 highway, the Las Hurdes Bajas area is more populated. It offers various restaurants serving traditional cuisine. From Coria, take the EX-109 and turn right onto the EX-204.
