REAL COLEGIATA DE SAN ISIDORO
Latin cross temple with a vaulted hall with Romanesque frescoes, a museum with valuable works and a library
Sometimes called the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art, this Latin cross temple was first built in 1055 at the request of King Ferdinand I, and then rebuilt in the 12th century. The two portals, especially that of the Perdón, bear witness to the influence of the art of Compostela by reproducing the characteristic themes of the Way of Saint James. But it is the Panteón Real that you must visit. It houses the tombs of 23 kings and queens of León and Castile, as well as 10 infants, 9 counts and other members of the nobility. The interior is splendid, with a vaulted hall covered with Romanesque frescoes depicting common themes from the New Testament and scenes from country life. Note also the superb capitals on top of the columns: they are finely carved, some with religious scenes, others with floral decorations. The museum is also worth a visit for its valuable works. Don't miss the famous chalice of Doña Urraca, set with gold filigree and precious stones, and the magnificent 11th century shrine containing the relics of Saint Isidore. Among other exceptional caskets, there is also a case carved in reindeer horn representing a dragon. This is the only piece of Viking art to be found in Spain. The library is also exceptional, with more than 300 incunabula and numerous ancient manuscripts, including a 10th century bible.
