IGLESIA SANTA MARIA DEL AZOGUE
Romanesque church in Benavente with Latin cross plan, five apses, three naves, transept with four vaults and Gothic sculptures
Located in the centre of the city, it is the main artistic monument of Benavente. The name Azogue derives from the Arabic name for a market, since it was held here in the Middle Ages. It is a twelfth century Romanesque church with a Latin cross floor plan, five apses, three naves and a large transept with four ribbed vaults. Inside, the 13th century gothic sculptures are noteworthy, preserving their original polychromy.
