SANTO TOMÁS MONASTERY
Royal monastery in Avila, where the Catholic Monarchs used to sit in summer, with the mausoleum of Prince Juan in the center
This 15th century royal monastery, where the Catholic Monarchs used to sit in summer, is one of the jewels of the city of Ávila. The church is in the form of a Latin cross with a single nave. It has an altarpiece by Pedro Berruguete and a magnificent choir with walnut stalls. In the centre, the mausoleum of Prince Juan facing the altar is the work of the sculptor Domenico Fancelli. Inside the monastery there is a small museum of Oriental Art and a museum of Natural Sciences. There are also three cloisters, the most impressive of which is that of Los Reyes.
