CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA
Church of Romanesque origin known for its main altarpiece, a work of the sixteenth century by Juan de Anchieta and the Cristo del Miserere
This church of Romanesque origin was rebuilt in the 16th and 18th centuries: its official inauguration dates back to 25 July 1735. The real treasure of the church is kept in the presbytery: the main altarpiece, the result of the exceptional work of Juan de Anchieta, designed in the 16th century. This authentic Mannerist jewel, with its fine reliefs and rich iconography, has been the subject of much ink over the centuries, as has the Cristo del Miserere, a masterpiece of realism and anatomical coherence.
