Bridge of medieval architecture, built in the 11th century for the easy access of pilgrims to Puente la Reina, symbol of the city
Built in the 11th century, presumably by order of the Queen Mayor of Castilla, this bridge was built to facilitate pilgrims' access to Puente la Reina. A superb example of medieval architecture, it has seven arches and a single tower where pilgrims had to pay a toll to continue their journey. The other two have collapsed and the bridge has lost its defensive aspect. It is the symbol of the city - it is because of the presence of this port that the city has this precise name - and, as such, it appears in its coat of arms.
