A beautiful white stone building in the city centre, the Cathedral of the Asunción de la Virgen is located on the hill of the "Cerro Somorrostro", founded by the Romans. It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries on the remains of an old abbey. It is Gothic in style and was badly damaged during the Santander fire of 1941. It underwent major repairs between 1942 and 1953 to regain its splendour. The church houses the Crypt of Christ.
