REPLICA OF THE ALTAMIRA CAVE
A remarkable site to better understand how our ancestors lived in Santillana del Mar.
The cave itself consists of a 270-metre gallery flanked by a few smaller rooms and ancillary galleries. Its complete identical reproduction will allow you, if you cannot see the originals, to understand exactly how our ancestors lived.
The first area is the mouth of the cave. It corresponds to the place where the occupants of Altamira lived. Many archaeological remains have been found here: bones, tools, remains of fireplaces... The next large room, where the light had already gone out, is where the famous polychrome buffaloes are found. There are more than twenty of them in total, all in different positions and exploiting the relief of the ceiling, hollows and cavities, to give them shape, volume or an impression of movement. Some of the drawings are supplemented by engravings, which also create shadows skillfully designed to give the buffalo the desired appearance.
The rest of the cave also contains many paintings, but less notable than those in the buffalo room. As you go through the gallery, you come to the corridor of the tectiforms, a series of signs studied by Abbé Breuil and whose shape evokes a roof. The gallery ends with the deer gallery, where a large number of these animals are represented on the walls.

Members' reviews on REPLICA OF THE ALTAMIRA CAVE
The ratings and reviews below reflect the subjective opinions of members and not the opinion of The Little Witty.
The cave of some 270 metres long. contains some of the finest examples of prehistoric cave art. Buffaloes, deers, wild boars, horses, made using ochre and red, surrounded by black, go back 14,000 years. Moving traces with hands, fixed to deliberately through time, will not leave you unmoved.
To ensure their conservation, the structure of the cave and paintings were carefully reproduced in the new cave of Altamira, according to the same pictorial processes. Beautiful artwork and the audiovisual ones well-made looking to pay the visit memorable. NOT TO MISS
C'est une réplique, mais ça donne une belle idée de l'original
