Gorges in a national park of the Picos de Europa with light and sportive routes
The gorge is located within the Picos de Europa National Park, and its southern limit extends 2.5 km into the province of León. The route, also known as the Divine Gorge, runs from northeast to southeast for 11 km between the villages of Caín and Poncebos. A path was laid out around 1920 to monitor the canal that carries water between the two villages and passes through 71 tunnels. Beware of possible rock falls!
Lighter version. From Cangas de Onis, take the AS-114 road to Las Arenas, then the AS-264 road to the starting point of the easy tour.
Sporty version. It takes about 3h30 to walk from Caín to Poncebos. From Posada, take the departmental road 6312, a real mule track but well paved, leading to the hamlet of Caín (8 km). Leave your car and luggage there, and the walking tour begins in one of the most beautiful areas of the Picos de Europa. Following the tumultuous course of the Cares River, the first section of the trail (3 km) will give you the strongest emotions: rocky walls overhanging the bed of the torrent, dizzying crossings on small wooden bridges, a totally wild nature on the edge of the Covadonga National Park. Not recommended for sensitive souls or pregnant women. From here, the path continues more calmly along the Cares and descends to Poncebos, the drop-off point (or departure point) for most hikers who venture into the gorge.
