MUSEO CATEDRAL DE SANTIAGO
Archaeological museum on 4 levels, with balconies, with a beautiful view of the Obradoiro square
The palace houses the archbishopric. Inside, you can admire some of the Gothic rooms of the palace built in the 12th century, including, in particular, the vast synodal hall with its superb carved ribbed vaults. To visit the Tesoro y la Capilla de las Reliquias (Treasure and Chapel of the Relics), the cloister and the Archaeological Museum, a group ticket must be purchased. Housed on the right side of the nave in a Gothic chapel, the Treasure includes a magnificent gold and silver custode made by Antonio de Arfe (1539-1566).
Designed by Juan de Aleva in a Plateresque style, the Chapel of the Relics, located next door, houses the head of Santiago the Minor.
On the right-hand side, we enter the museum. It presents, on four levels, a vast collection of sacred art retracing the history of the cathedral. The most precious pieces are located in the foundations of the old cathedral from the 9th century. In particular, there are fragments of the old Romanesque façade of the Obradoiro carved in the purest Mateo style (by Master Mateo, late 12th century).
The crypt also contains what is believed to be the most precious of the treasures: a silver urn containing the remains of Saint James. Upstairs there is a collection of tapestries made in the 18th century from cartoons by Goya, Rubens and other Flemish masters. From the balconies you have a superb view of the Plaza de l'Obradoiro and the rooftops of Santiago.

The ratings and reviews below reflect the subjective opinions of members and not the opinion of The Little Witty.
