CIDADE DA CULTURA DE GALICIA
Architectural and cultural complex in Saint-Jacques offering temporary exhibitions, plays and concerts
An impressive silhouette for this architectural and cultural complex, which you can see on the way from the airport to Santiago de Compostela, since the total area of the complex (buildings, squares, spaces ...) covers 160,000 square meters. Launched in 1999 through an international competition that saw 14 projects (including those of Jean Nouvel and Ricardo Bofill) compete, this City aimed to give Santiago an architectural reference that would bring it into the 21st century. And it was finally awarded to Peter Eisenman, a North American architect. The approach of the latter: to build a whole taking again the lines of the mount Gaiás and resting on a deconstructivist logic, outside as inside. Although it has been praised by many architects, the project has given rise to much controversy, mainly concerning its financing, which was considered excessive for the resources of Galicia. Of this City, inaugurated in January 2011, 4 buildings (of the 6 planned in the initial project) are completed and accessible: the Gaiás Museum, which hosts temporary exhibitions; the Library of Galicia; the Galician Archives, an auditorium hosting plays and concerts, and central services. All of these unique buildings are connected by streets and plazas, forming a true city within Santiago de Compostela.
