BASILICA OF SANTA MARIA LA MAYOR
Basilica with a plateresque facade, a symbol of the power of the body of sailors in the Renaissance in Pontevedra
This basilica dates from the 16th century. Its plateresque façade, richly sculpted, can be contemplated like an altarpiece: the ordered beauty of the Renaissance. Note the fishermen and their nets at the top of the work. The building is a symbol of the power of the seafaring community during the Renaissance. It was commissioned by the fishermen's guild of Mareantes. The streets surrounding the building are part of the old Judería, the Jewish quarter.
