PROVINCIAL MUSEUM OF PONTEVEDRA
An exceptional provincial museum that has assembled a collection of more than 16,000 different pieces including sculptures, paintings, engravings
Since its foundation in 1927, this exceptional provincial museum has assembled a collection of more than 16,000 diverse pieces, including sculptures, paintings, engravings, coins, archaeological remains, everyday tools, musical instruments and jewellery, allowing us to appreciate the evolution of Galician society from ancient times to the present day. To display its numerous objects, it has several annexes in Pontevedra, including the ruins of Santo Domingo and the former Jesuit convent (Sarmiento Building). The visit, however, is limited to the prestigious enclosure of two adjoining 18th-century pazos. In the building on the right (Fernández López Building), an archaeological room houses pieces of Roman glassware and a curious collection of Etruscan terracotta ex-votos (twin brothers of the wax figures found in Galician churches). This is followed by a series of jewels from the Bronze Age and the Celtic culture (gold torch bracelets). On the first floor there is a collection of religious paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries, divided into four small rooms: works by Zurbarán, Murillo and the El Greco school, among the most valuable. The second building (García Flórez building) is mainly devoted to the navy, with objects that belonged to Admiral Mendez Nuñez, a great military hero of the 19th century: navy ships, chests, pistols and, in the basement, an astonishing reconstruction of the command cabin of his sailing ship.
