PARQUE ARQUEOLÓGICO DE CAMPO LAMEIRO
Guided tour that leads to 28 engraved rocks in the open air, to the exhibition space, to the site of Campo Lameiro in Pontevedra
The guided tour and the trail set up on the site will lead you to 28 engraved rocks in the open air. A hundred or so have been found on the entire site of the archaeological park, but the others are less accessible or less representative. Opened in 2011, the interpretation centre provides the necessary keys to understanding rock art in general, through what can be observed here. A very interesting report broadcasted as an introduction translates well the will of the center: the engravings are presented not by specialists but by farmers or children of the region who are in contact with the engravings every day and give their own vision of this primitive art. The good news is that the material is almost always translated into French.
The exhibition space is intended to familiarize the visitor with the engravings and forms that he will then discover in situ. The trained eye will better read the lines, which are often worn by erosion and not necessarily very legible. It is best to schedule your visits at the beginning or end of the day, when the low-angled light better highlights the fine lines obtained by rubbing or percussion.
The exhibition is very interactive, with many screens and manipulations. The spaces are divided by walls whose layout traces the silhouette of a deer figure, the emblematic engraving of the site. Each space focuses on a specific theme, or rather a specific question. Modern methods of analysis with scanners and 3D modelling give hope for new discoveries. But as far as petroglyphs are concerned, even dating is a problem ! And as shown in section 6, the themes approached in the symbolism of the petroglyphs are also, very often, a mystery.
The site of Campo Lameiro is distinguished by the great diversity of the subjects represented. The circuit, well thought out with shaded areas and equipped areas, takes you on a 3 km journey to discover the main engraved stones. Horses, labyrinths, spirals, deer... in front of each rock, a diagram will help you find the figures and distinguish them from each other.
A Bronze Age village has been reconstructed in a space away from the petroglyphs. Here you can experience the daily challenges and lifestyles of people who lived some 4,000 years ago. Workshops are held regularly in the summer to teach the youngest how to make fire, hunt, engrave..
