TEMPLE OF LITERATURE (VAN THANH MIEU)
Temple dedicated to Phan Thanh Gian, the mandarin who signed the treaty ceding the 3 eastern provinces of Cochinchina to France.
Built in 1864, this temple is dedicated to Phan Thanh Gian (1796-1867), a great mandarin who, under the reign of Tu Duc, signed in 1862 the treaty of cession of the 3 eastern provinces of Cochinchina to France. Although he was considered a traitor by the Vietnamese, the temple dedicated to him is nevertheless superb, while remaining discreet. Also royal governor of the 3 western provinces, he failed to defend Vinh Long and preferred to kill himself.
