TEMPLE OF NGUYÊN TRUNG THING
Temple dedicated to Nguyên Trung Truc, leader of the Vietnamese resistance against the French from 1860.
This temple is dedicated to Nguyên Trung Truc (1838-1868), leader of the Vietnamese resistance against the French from 1860. In 1861, he set fire to the French warship L'Espérance (a painting depicting this event as well as pieces of wood, relics of the said ship, are in the building to the left of the temple). The French replied by taking his mother and some civilians hostage. Nguyên Trung Truc surrendered and was executed on October 27, 1868, in the market place.
