KONTUM CATHEDRAL
Built by French missionaries, it's a splendid church built entirely of wood and without the aid of a single nail.
During the time of the French presence, Kontum was an important center where missionaries were trained to evangelize the minorities of the highlands. On Nguyên Huê, the church is splendid, entirely built out of wood, an astonishing detail, without the help of a nail. It celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2008. Started in June 1933, it welcomed its first parishioners a little more than a year after the beginning of the works. The seminary (on Ly Tu Trong, opposite a crypt) also has an architecture full of the old French provincial charm. In the exhibition room of the bishop's palace are displayed many objects relating to the life of the Ba Na (or Bahnar), the ethnic group most represented in the Tây Nguyên: gongs, drums stretched out of elephant skin, stone axes, shields, swords, jewellery, jars... The cathedral is located right next to a traditional long house(rong nha). Behind the church, the orphanage of Kontum is the occasion of a visit always very moving. A few steps away from the cathedral, finally, in the Tran Hung Dao street, the visit of the bishopric will allow to admire the superb building located in the middle of a flowered park (entrance by a side door, by asking the guards) and which mixes with happiness influences coming from Europe and ethnic traditions of the region. A small museum gives an insight into the history of Catholicism in the highlands. A beautiful and very complete program to understand the history of the city.
