NINE VENERABLE GUNS
Nine cannons at the foot of the Imperial City, sunk on the orders of Emperor Gia Long, have a symbolic protective role.
At the foot of the Imperial City, in front of the Ngo Môn gate, 9 cannons sunk by order of Emperor Gia Long (February 1803), with weapons taken from the Tây-Son. The cannons were completed in January 1804. They symbolize the 5 elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) and the 4 seasons. Each cannon measures 5.10 meters in length and weighs over 10 tons. Previously, they were placed at the foot of the citadel, but were moved by the will of Emperor Khai Dinh. The cannons were never used for military purposes, but rather for symbolic protection.
