MUSEUM OF MILITARY HISTORY OF VIET NAM
Museum opposite the statue of Lenin, presenting the main armed conflicts in Vietnam's history.
This museum, located opposite the statue of Lenin, is one of the seven most visited national museums in the country. Opened in 1959, it was originally named "Army Museum". It presents the main armed conflicts that have marked the history of Vietnam and exhibits uniforms, pennants, military equipment, reconstructions of certain battles, including the animated siege of Dien Bien Phu and the capture of Saigon. More than 2,000 documents and objects offer visitors a comprehensive overview of the country's military history from the period of the Hung kings to that of Ho Chi Minh. They reveal the combat methods and craft weapons used in the fight against foreign invaders. On the ground floor, at the back, there is a temporary exhibition room.
Leaving the citadel, one can continue to the right, to the Flag Tower (Ky Dai), built in 1805 under the reign of Emperor Gia Long, south of the citadel, on the remains of the old southern outer gate Tam Mon. The ensemble is 33.4 m high. It was preserved during the demolition of the fortifications during the French period. The tower was used by the French as an observation point and as a military communication station. Today it is a symbolic monument which is part of the Army Museum.
A coffee kiosk allows a pleasant break and a meditation in front of the statue of Lenin and in the vicinity of a MiG used during the war against the Americans.
