VILLAGE OF NGU-XA
In an islet of Lac Bach's Lake, the village of Ngu-Xa specialises in the manufacture of copper objects. Ngu-Xa means «five villages» because, under the Règne rule (1428-1527), the inhabitants of the 5 villages of Dông May, Châu My, Long Thuong, Tiên Diên and Dao Viên of the districts of Van Yên (Hung Yên Province) and Bình Thanh (province of Bac Ninh) have regrouped in Thang Long, in this place, to hit the currency and sink objects. cultuels (bells, statues…).
Among the works carried out by the craftsmen of Ngu-Xa, the statue of the Thân Quang pagoda in the village. At a height of 5,5 m, it weighs 12,3 tonnes. Buddha sits on a lotus throne of 96 petals, which necessitated the melting of 1,6 ton of copper. This work was completed in October 1952.
The activity of the village was interrupted as a result of the American war. In 1984, some families revived the work of their ancestors. The objects produced by the Smelters-Xa smelters, especially bells whose sound is particularly famous, are very sought after. The activity is now threatened by land shortages and land speculation. Quiet and a little removed in the city, the village of Ngu-Xa is a pleasant place of residence…
