HANG GAI STREET
This street marks the outer boundary between the Central District and the Old Quarter.
Hàng Gai Street (Hemp Street) marks the outer boundary of the Central District with the Old Quarter. In the past, hemp used to be sold here to make hammocks or fishing nets. According to the writer Huu Ngoc, "Hemp Street was different from Silk Street (Hàng Dao Street): the latter was essentially a commercial street, while the former symbolized letters and courtesy". And today, the stores on Hàng Gai Street cater to a much wealthier - and more touristy - clientele than those on Hàng Dao Street
