This Animals Asia center is home to over a hundred bears that have escaped from the hands of traffickers.
The Tam Dao bear rescue centre is supported by the organisation "Animals Asia". It is home to more than a hundred bears that have escaped from the hands of traffickers. These are Asian black bears (ursus thibetanus) also known as lunar bears because of the golden crescent covering their chest. The Asian bear is on the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) because of habitat loss and exploitation, mainly for its bile, used in traditional medicine. It is also listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). However, bear bile products continue to cross borders illegally. The Vietnamese government has banned the extraction and sale of bear bile and is currently seeking to eliminate bear farming due to animal welfare and conservation concerns. Despite official rhetoric, exploitation continues, in a context of widespread corruption that undermines any protective measures. The Tam Dao rescue centre allows bears that have escaped from traffickers as a result of the activities of the growing number of environmental activists to regain their health and live in peace (many are unable to return to the wild) in an adapted environment.
