TÂY THIEN PAGODA
Founded between 1009 and 1225, this pagoda is now one of the leading Zen Buddhist shrines in the north of the country.
The site on Mount Thach Ba was founded during the Ly dynasty (1009-1225). In the Tây Thiên ("Western Heaven") temple, an inscription reads: "Temple of terrestrial Hell". Today, the site is one of the main sanctuaries of Zen Buddhism (Truc Lâm sect) in northern Vietnam. A cable car speeds up the celestial ascent. Everywhere, newly constructed buildings whose spectacular architecture is sadly reminiscent of theme parks. The slopes of the mountain are given over to temple merchants.
