DINH BANG COMMUNAL HOUSE (DINH)
This splendid town house, completed in 1736, is one of the oldest and most remarkable in the region.
Ly Thai Tô, founder of the Ly dynasty, who decided to transfer the capital of Hoa Lu to present-day Hanoi, was born somewhere in this place, in the hamlet of Cô Phap. There are still some remains of the dynastic temple which was partially destroyed in 1950 by the French army. The temple was restored in 1990.
In the past, the village also housed the tombs of the Ly kings, but the whole was destroyed at the beginning of the 20th century without the location of the burials being known today. The villagers of Dinh Bang have long specialized in lacquer work.
The village of Dinh Bang is best known for its splendid communal house (dinh), one of the oldest and most famous in the region. Completed in 1736, built in iron wood, in the form of a house on stilts, it is dedicated to the cult of the three tutelary geniuses of the village: Cao Son Dai Vuong (great king of the High Mountains, genius of the Soil), Thuy Ba Dai Vuong (great suzerain king of the Waters, genius of the Waters) and Bach Le Dai Vuong (genius of the Harvests). The communal house resisted relatively well to the assaults of time and especially to those of the French army which tried to demolish it by harnessing the splendid framework composed of 84 columns to chains pulled by a tank. Each engraved motif - and there are thousands of them - is unique and is almost a work in itself. The tiled roof of the building, which descends very low with its four curved corners, is also remarkable.
