Built with the help of the Soviet Union, the dam supplies electricity to the North and 50% to the rest of the country.
Launched on November 6, 1979, the dam was built with the help of the Soviet Union. The 8 generators (240,000 KW each) supply electricity to the North and 50% to the Centre and South, via the Trans-Vietnamese high-voltage line. Until the commissioning of the Son La dam at the end of 2011, it was the largest structure of its type built in Vietnam. A bridge provides an impressive view of the dam's gates.
