This beautiful museum is one of the most interesting in the country. It contains nearly 9,000 African works from the 4th century AD to the present day, including classical, historical and contemporary works. The so-called primitive art collections come from southern, western and central Africa mainly. They include many beaded objects, musical instruments, sculptures and masks, and traditional textiles. There are also paintings by Irma Stern, Walter Battiss, Gerard Sekoto and other more contemporary artists who expressed themselves during the apartheid years .
