WOMEN'S LIVING HERITAGE MUSEUM
Monument dedicated to all the women who contributed in one way or another to the struggle for freedom in South Africa.
Inaugurated in 2016, this monument is dedicated to all the women who have contributed in one way or another to the struggle for freedom in South Africa. It aims to honor and enhance the country's female heritage, and in particular that of four remarkable women: Lillian Ngoyi, Sophia Williams-de Bruyn, Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa. It was these four women who initiated the pacifist march, later dubbed the "Women's March", held in Pretoria on August 9, 1956, to denounce the system of racial segregation and pass laws. Nearly 20,000 women of all origins and from all corners of the country took to the streets of Pretoria, sometimes even with their children, in a non-violent, anti-apartheid, feminist protest. A major symbolic event, which has been commemorated every year since 1994, August 9 having become Women's Day in South Africa. The memorial is a reminder of the immeasurable legacy of these four activists, and more broadly of all the women who fought against oppression. Around the monument, a "walk of memory" allows visitors to appreciate some of these other figures, and to immerse themselves in the history of the place and of the actresses of the city of Pretoria. The memorial is also an artistic venue, exhibiting works on the subject of women's struggle in South Africa.
