German Conrad Frederick Genal left his country in 1875 and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion. While he was crossing the Suez Canal on a war building, he jumped overboard and managed to win the land by avoiding tireurs. There is trace in South Africa. Genal painted friezes in the thirties at the Impala Hotel (75 De Villiers Street). See also at the Digger's Retreat, on the R 38 towards Kaapmuiden.
