PILGRIM’S REST INFO
Pilgrim's Rest is a small village and museum in South Africa's Mpumalanga province. Founded in 1873, it has been declared a national monument and offers visitors a unique experience, transporting them back to the gold rush era of the 1870s. At that time, the region was densely populated with gold seekers who came to try their luck in the Transvaal goldfields. Although most of the seekers failed to find enough gold to make their fortune, the town enjoyed a period of prosperity thanks to the influx of people and the businesses that were set up to cater to the seekers' needs. Today, Pilgrim's Rest has become a preserved tourist site, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the history of the gold rush and admire the traces of past mining activity. The village museum also offers activities such as gold panning and exhibitions of local crafts.
