AUWAL MOSQUE
Auwal Mosque, the country's oldest mosque and a symbol of Cape Town Muslims' struggle for recognition in the region.
The oldest mosque in the country. Symbol of the struggle of the Muslims of Cape Town for the recognition of their religion and the conquest of their freedom. Its first imam was banished to Robben Island for conspiring with the English behind the back of the Dutch. In prison, he wrote many copies of the Koran from memory until his release in 1793, when the British took power in the colony. He opened a "madrassa", a Koranic school. Nearly five years later, one of his students donated him a piece of land where he could build this mosque.
