When the father of Islam in South Africa, Tuan Guru died in 1807, the movement split into two congregations and Jan van Boughies's house was transformed into a prayer room. However, according to legend, Jan's difficult character would have prompted practitioners to return to the first mosque. The name was then changed and now makes reference to the palm that grows before its entry. On Buitengracht is the Nurul Islam Mosque, founded by the son of Tuan Guru in 1844.
