Stroll through the golden dunes to discover a cross erected in March 1488 by Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias.
A walk through the golden dunes to the padrao, erected on 12th March 1488 by the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias, the first to round the Cape of Storms. The cross in question was found broken by time. A replica made in Portugal was erected at Kwaaihoek, on the historic site. Turn left off the R72 a few kilometres west of Kenton-on-Sea, then left to the car park. You leave your car, for a 2 hour round trip in the sand. Tiring, but exhilarating. The contrast of the golden dunes on the royal blue ocean is striking.
