Site of the Battle of Scheepersnek, the Battle of Holkrans and the Battle of Blood River Poort.
Battle of Scheepersnek. On 20 May 1900, a company of mounted infantry was ambushed by the Boers. Monuments visible from the road, 14 km from Vryheid on the R33 from Dundee.
Battle of Holkrans. While negotiations were in progress between the English and the Boers, a small troop bivouacked on the Holkrans farm, on the slopes of the Zungwini mountain. On 6 May 1902, the Zulus attacked the camp by surprise, killing 56 of the 72 soldiers present. From Vryheid, take the R33 towards Paulpietersburg for 20 km. At the sign "Zungwini", turn right and continue for 4 km until the sign "Holkrans". Continue for 100 m until you see a house on the left hand side in poor condition. Park and cross the bank. Behind the top of the hill: the monument.
Battle of Blood River Poort. In Afrikaans, a poort is a pass between two mountains, a parade. During the second invasion of Natal, General Louis Botha leaves the town of Ermelo to be joined in the pass by the forces of Vryheid's commando under the command of General Emmet. Ignoring this appointment, the English launched an attack. On September 17, 1901, Colonel Gough triggered a frontal shock against Emmet's men, but the British were immediately taken on their flanks by Botha's soldiers... and beaten. Take the R33 towards Dundee for 21 km, then right towards Utrecht for 5 km and right at the sign "Blood River Poort". Continue for 8 km.
