ZULULAND ECOADVENTURE
The best way to discover traditional Zulu culture.
The best plan to discover the traditional Zulu culture. This agency is owned by Graham, a "white Zulu" who is involved in development projects for the local, rural and very poor villages. He has built over 300 schools since he started and is recruiting volunteers! This local character knows all the villages and is always aware of the weddings, initiation ceremonies of young Zulus, consultation of Sangoma healers in the surrounding villages where he takes you. The villagers consult at a collective meeting in the healer's hut on their current problems. Take your time, put on your best clothes like the locals who do you the honour of inviting you to their party: you will be extremely well received. It is a pleasure for the locals to meet and exchange with travellers who are interested in their culture. The agency also offers tours to the Eshowe market or to the township with Mama Gladys, the best township tour ever! In all these places Graham is welcomed as a friend and so are you, which will make a difference.
Annual parties you can attend. If you are in the area, don't miss the Zulu Reed Dance on the last Saturday of August, a gathering of 25,000 Zulu girls dancing with reeds, the KheKheKhe, a Sangoma gathering at the end of February, and the big Shembe gathering from 15 to 31 October, which brings together more than 30,000 Shembe.
