In 1872, Aboobaker Jhaveri, who arrived from Porbandar, moved to Durban to move his trade. The first Indian trader, Baboo Naidoo, has already been on the same street since 1856. Aboobaker prospered in business and built this historic building. It was he who brought in a young Lawyer named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi from London. Its descendants today have many shops in town.
