BEGIJNHOF - AMSTERDAM BEGUINAGE
A superb "hofje" (city within the city), this beguinage hosts several churches and exudes a unique and timeless atmosphere.
The begijnhof, founded in 1346, was destroyed several times by fire and then rebuilt. Note the small medieval church. At no. 34 stands the town's oldest wooden house. The Catholic church, hidden away at no. 29 since 1665, opposite the Anglican church, can be visited during the French-language mass on Sundays at 11am. It's a sublime place that leaves no one indifferent. When you visit, keep your voice down for the peace and quiet of the inhabitants.
