Built in 1285 under the orders of Count Florent V, Muiderslot is one of the country's oldest and best-maintained castles. It's an excellent excursion from Amsterdam, within easy reach of the central station (1h by bike, 45 min by public transport or 20 min by car). The visit is pleasant and impressive: the castle has retained its drawbridge, ramparts and moat, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. There are plenty of facilities for children. Audioguides available in French.
