Utter waste of time. The only place in Amsterdam that was a complete waste of time and money.

The highlight of the museum is the Dutch East Indiaman life-size replica. They did an excellent job in replicating the ship piece by piece. There are other exhibits and paintings of Dutch maritime history. A life-size windmill to explain how the Netherlands reclaimed land from the sea would have been wonderful.

Bellissimo veramente.

The firealarm took off while we sat eating, so we had to go out of the building while it was happening. When we got back, they had trown out our food, so now i had a hungry child and we didnt see the big ship at the end.

When i talked to the staff about getting (at least) a free ticket for the next day (especially because they took half our food??) they just said 'you should have been quicker". Clearly the staff never had children and now about how slow things go when they are hungry, get their food stolen and dont see the main attraction.

I'm a maritime buff, and was a little let down with the exhibits, the Dutch East Indiaman ship however is worth the visit. The museum is very nice and staff friendly, just lacking in any detailed info on ships...

Jammer.

Wonderful. So much to see, we were there for 5 hours !! A complete replica ship, models, ship decorations, maritime instruments, artworks. Something for everybody.

I used to go here regularly with my dad, but they renovated it between 2007 and 2011 and now it is basically only useful to organize house-parties.

The exposition lacks all the drama and items that the old museum used to offer. No periscopes to watch through (loved that as a kid) and hardly any models of ancient and WW2 warships.

The only mention of Piet Heijn and the Silverfleet is in the form of a "remembrance coin". Really pathetic.

Also, the slavery past of the Dutch is basically glossed over/deleted from the texts next to the paintings. It just says "This or that admiral....and an UNKNOWN man" where it is obviously meant to portray slavery.

The whole building feels "half empty" (or "half full", but that would still sound terrible for a museum).

The 2 stars is for the fact it actually has a replica East-Indiaman that you can walk around in.

Highly recommend a visit, especially with your kids. Our first full day in Amsterdam included a visit to this museum and was well worth it. My kids enjoyed the exhibits in the museum, but the highlight of our visit was obviously the ship. It was hard for me to get the kids to leave the ship...even though it was closing time:) Loved it here, very highly recommend.

Outstanding museum. We found it very interesting. Lots of old maps, sextants, and Dutch sailing history. The inside is really not for kids. However, the ship "Amsterdam" would be enjoyable for all ages.
