DE GOUDEN BOCHT - THE GOLDILOCKS
Superb portion of the Herengracht that testifies to the past splendour of the Golden Age. We are transported in a living painting.
This is the name given to the most prestigious stretch of the Herengracht, the Lords' Canal, between Leidsestraat (a pleasant shopping street) and Vijzelstraat. It was in this part of the canal that wealthy, wealthy merchant families settled during the Golden Age (17th century), building sumptuous mansions, the work of great architects, that still bear witness to the prosperity of yesteryear. Luxury was particularly high on the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat. The canal, which originally stopped at the Leidsegracht, was extended in the 1660s, and the coveted plots were sold between 1664 and 1665. The city encouraged the purchase of double plots, enabling wealthier families to build sumptuous homes by renowned architects such as Philippe Vingboons and Adriaan Dortsman. These houses feature richly ornate classical facades, decorated ceilings and gardens with statues and pavilions. Almost every building has an interesting story to tell. At numbers 475 and 476 is the Huis van Neuville, the most beautiful mansion on the canal and in the city. An imposing warehouse called Harmonie stands at canal numbers 516 and 518. At number 497, you can visit the charming Kattenkabinet. The superb building at number 502 is home to the mayor, Femke Halsema. The Goethe Institut is also located on the canal, at number 470.
