COBRA MUSEUM - MUSÉE COBRA
Museum dedicated to the Cobra movement, whose interior presents a huge playful space with white walls flooded with natural light
The architecture of this museum in Amstelveen is intriguing at first glance. From the outside, the building resembles two interlocking triangles. Inside, the space is playful, bathed in natural light, with white walls creating a soothing, Zen atmosphere. The circular patio, topped with a glass roof, adds an extra touch of luminosity, ideal for sublimating the bright colors of the Cobra works. The minimalist décor, designed by architect Wim Quist (also creator of Rotterdam's Maritime Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum annex), contrasts with the creative energy of the artists on display.
Focusing on modern art from 1945 onwards, the museum immerses visitors in the international world of the Cobra movement. The permanent exhibitions are largely dedicated to this artistic movement, but other collections also enrich the visit. The Vrij Beelden and Creatie collections broaden the panorama of twentieth-century Dutch art with artists such as Arnando, Boers, Gerrits, Hunziker, Ortvald and Corneille, among others. The site also offers magnificent views of the old canal. Interesting anecdote: the Dane Ortvald, himself a member of the Cobra movement, is quoted as saying on visiting this museum, "It's precisely this established order, the museum world, that we've opposed so much." Interesting and varied temporary exhibitions are held here on a regular basis.
