DEPOT BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN
39 meter high building, an incredible and unique project that offers the public access to the repository of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum
This fabulous building, the work of Rotterdam architects MVRDV, is a unique and extraordinary project. It offers the public unprecedented access to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen repository, enabling them to discover collections that cannot be exhibited. The 39-metre-high building has already become an icon of the city, with its slender base standing as if on the level of the Museumpark. The Depot provides access to 151,000 stored art objects, as well as an insight into restoration and conservation activities. It comprises 11 depots, spread over 7 floors. From the outside, it is covered in mirrors, spectacularly reflecting the entire city on its surface. After the Markthal, MVRDV has created another Rotterdam classic. The roof houses a magnificent urban terrace, offering panoramic views, and the Renilde restaurant. The latter is named after Renilde Hammacher-van den Brande, curator of the Boijmans from 1962 to 1978, who laid the foundations for one of the Netherlands' most important museum collections of modern art. The establishment, run by renowned Rotterdam-born chef Jim de Jong, features local, vegan cuisine that adapts to the harvests and seasons. The menu changes almost daily. The terrace, simply incredible, is an invitation to travel and poetry. An absolutely unique and magnificent place. If you had to visit just one cultural spot in Rotterdam, this would probably be it.
