MARITIEM MUSEUM ROTTERDAM - MARITIME MUSEUM
A large modern building with a triangular shape that houses an interesting museum with an exhibition dedicated to navigation
We're standing on the Leuvehaven dock, the city's first port. This captivating museum is housed in a large, modern triangular building. The first floor features a permanent exhibition dedicated to navigation and inland navigation, with particular attention paid to the many models on display, while other temporary exhibitions occupy the rest of the space. You'll also find a library, a reading room, a small store and a specialized bookshop, all in a pleasant atmosphere.
The museum also aims to introduce young people to the pleasures of navigation, even allowing them to pilot a real ship in the harbour. This, however, is only the first element of a much more original whole. Among the attractions is a fully restored former armored ship of the Royal Navy, allowing visitors to admire life on board as it was in the 19th century. Children aged 8 and over can take part in the Offshore experience: equipped with a safety vest and helmet, they climb aboard a platform in the middle of the sea thanks to a 360-degree projection.
The museum also includes an outdoor section. With 20 ships moored alongside Leuvehaven, which can be visited freely, and docks housing various machines and cranes for transshipping ships, this place looks more like a small port than a museum.
