OUDE KERK
A former parish church, dedicated to St. Hippolytus, has been enlarged several times, and has a triple choir
Built around 1250, this former parish church, dedicated to St. Hippolytus, has been enlarged several times and features a triple choir. Its steeple, an imposing Flemish-style tower erected in 1325, leans irresistibly under the weight of its gigantic 9-ton, 7-meter-diameter drone, once operated by two teams of twelve men who took turns. Today, it houses the tombs of famous admirals, the funerary monument of Elisabeth Marnix and, most interestingly, the tombstone of Delft-born Johannes Vermeer.
