MUSEUM BEELDEN AAN ZEE
Museum dedicated to the human figure, designed by the architect Wim Quist, presenting a collection of more than a thousand sculptures
Close to the Kurhaus, it's one of the city's most pleasant spots along the Scheveningen beach, so decried for being too modernized... The present building was constructed on the orders of William I so that his wife, Queen Wilhelmina, who was in poor health, could rejuvenate and rest in the fresh air of the North Sea. Located in a seaside park, this partly open-air museum is devoted to the human figure: sculptures of all sizes are installed in the rooms of the former pavilion, as well as in patios and on terraces, providing quiet, intimate settings. Designed by architect Wim Quist, the museum is set in the dunes of The Hague's famous beach. It has the distinction of being the only museum in the Netherlands devoted exclusively to international, modern and contemporary sculptural art. The collection now boasts over a thousand sculptures and several hundred medals, all created by artists from all over the world and in a wide variety of materials. For more than fifteen years, the SprookjesBeelden aan Zee (fairytale sculptures by the sea) on the boulevard in Scheveningen have been a fascinating terrace full of bronze sculptures. These works by Tom Otterness are now considered masterpieces the world over! The setting is very Instagrammable, with the beach in the background. The museum organizes three or four major exhibitions a year (until March 2025, Hans Bayens is on the program).
