MADURODAM
A park with 338 miniatures of Dutch monuments, 21 interactive animations and 4 indoor attractions
Opened in 1952, this museum is actually a mausoleum in memory of an incredible war hero, George Maduro, who served as an officer in the Battle of the Netherlands in 1940. The park was the brainchild of his parents, who named it in his honor.
For over fifty years, Madurodam has prided itself on being the smallest town in the Netherlands! It's a miniature city, or city within a city, representing typical Dutch monuments on a scale of 1:25. The park features 338 miniatures of Dutch monuments, 21 interactive animations and 4 indoor attractions. The first half is very interesting, featuring perfectly reconstituted landmarks such as Anne Frank's house, Utrecht's Domtoren, fields of flowers, windmills, canals and recently added features such as Schiphol airport and Rotterdam's sublime Erasmus bridge. Take time to admire Rembrandt's Night Watch , for example, which can be seen from above the Rijksmuseum. The second half is made up of more recent monuments, often less well-known to the general public.
Thematic exhibitions are also regularly organized. Of particular note: Madurodam Park includes 65,000 "Madurodammertjes", the inhabitants of the miniature city, and it's a real pleasure to be able to observe them in the park. At one time, every employee who retired or left his or her job in Madurodam was represented by a figurine in the park.
