GALERIJ PRINS WILLEM V
Magnificent painting gallery, considered the oldest museum in the country in The Hague
Located on the square that was once the forecourt of the castle, this magnificent painting gallery can be considered the oldest museum in the country. Stadhouder Wilhelm V, an art lover and great collector, had the gallery rebuilt and fitted out in the purest 18th century style, and in 1774 he installed his collection there, which he immediately made accessible to the public. The collection was plundered during the Dutch Revolution and returned in its major part in 1815. William V donated it to the state. A large part of it has been in the Mauritshuis since 1822.
