BREDIUS MUSEUM
Museum presenting the personal collection of Abraham Bredius, scholar, art historian and traveler, curator of the Mauritshuis
Housed in a handsome 1756 building facing the Hofvijver, this museum presents the personal collection of Abraham Bredius (1855-1946), a learned art historian and traveler who was curator of the Mauritshuis for 20 years. In 1922, Abraham Bredius moved to Monaco and loaned his collection to the municipality, promising to bequeath it upon his death. As a down payment, he donated the painting De Sater en de boer by Jan Steen, which became the museum's birth certificate. The museum has been owned by the municipality of The Hague since 1946, when Bredius died.
