ZUIDERZEEMUSEUM - MUSEUMPARK
Museum with a permanent exhibition, allowing to discover the life of the fishermen of the Zuiderzee region
The Zuiderzeemuseum takes you on a journey through time, and what a journey it is! In addition to regular temporary exhibitions, the completely renovated and enlarged indoor museum also features a permanent exhibition, giving you an insight into the life of the Zuiderzee fishermen.
Trade and transport to the hinterland, the history of the East India Company and whaling (very important in the 17th and 18th centuries) are also richly evoked. A wealth of paintings, ship models, everyday objects, clothing and film clips take you on a journey through seven centuries of the history of the Zuiderzee and its people.
The Museumpark, the open-air part of the Zuiderzeemuseum, evokes life in the former fishing ports of the Zuiderzee during the period 1880-1932. This part of the museum exudes the atmosphere of an old Zuiderzee town. It includes over 130 houses, stores and workshops, districts and streets, from Akersloot, a village in North Holland, to Zoutkamp, in the province of Groningen. In this village-museum, you can observe different trades at work. There's a special place for children: the Children's Island, where they can learn about the activities practiced by Dutch children in Marken around 1930, and have fun dressing up in traditional costumes.
