ZUIDERZEEMUSEUM - MUSEUMPARK
Museum with a permanent exhibition, allowing to discover the life of the fishermen of the Zuiderzee region
At the Zuiderzeemuseum, a real journey through time awaits you. And what a journey it is! The completely renovated and enlarged indoor museum features a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life of fishermen in the Zuiderzee region. Trade, shipping routes to the hinterland, the history of the East India Company and the crucial whaling industry of the 17th and 18th centuries are all richly illustrated. You'll travel through seven centuries of history thanks to a multitude of paintings, ship models, utilitarian objects, clothing and film extracts. Temporary exhibitions are also organized here.
The open-air Museumpark recreates life in the former fishing ports of the Zuiderzee between 1880 and 1932. This museum village, comprising over 140 buildings, stores and workshops, evokes the atmosphere of a small fishing town, with houses from villages such as Akersloot and Zoutkamp. Here, you can watch craftsmen at work and discover ancient trades, as well as eat delicious smoked herring or a piece of Zuiderzee cheese.
For younger visitors, a variety of activities allow them to immerse themselves in the daily activities of the Dutch in the 1930s, while having fun dressing up in traditional costumes. A visit as instructive as it is entertaining, for young and old alike! Good to know: guided tours are available in French, subject to prior reservation.
