PIETERSKERK
A remarkable Romanesque church, founded by bishop Bernold, with an exceptional crypt in Utrecht.
St. Peter's Church, founded by Bishop Bernold, was built in the Romanesque style between 1000 and 1100, a period characterized by the proliferation of religious buildings in Utrecht. It boasts an admirable crypt, a sort of half-underground cellar that forms the choir. Exceptionally, excavation work carried out half a century ago unearthed an intact red sandstone coffin. This is believed to belong to Bernold, the founder of the building, and is on display in the crypt. The church's two towers were destroyed by a tornado in 1674.
